The Introduction

GC01 is a custom home designed around a young family’s needs, the climate of KZN, and the dramatic coastline. Informed by the client’s brief to embrace outstretched views of the breakers as much as possible, a diagonal axis was created on site to inform the orientation and spatial arrangement of the house with a transparent volume that connects the sunny back garden to the ocean views in front. The architecture by Craft of Architecture cleverly maximizes on transparency, creating seamless, fluid, multi-use spaces throughout.

The Brief

The client’s brief was to create clean, simple spaces with a textured palette that complement the architecture and harmonize the various function areas, without taking away from the exclusivity of the home, nor the practical needs of a young family. The house is wholly staged around the dramatic views of the ocean and inside-outside living so the interior style gravitated towards placing more emphasis on this main feature. The living areas are open plan with kitchen, dining and homework zones flowing into one another, all tied together by a feature recycled-glass pendant in the center of the space, custom designed by Steven Pikus for the home.

Project Features

The ground floor plan includes the living area, dining room, kitchen with the more private bedroom wing accessed off a fully glazed, light-filled curving passage that leads to a pyjama lounge and kids study area. The lower ‘noisy’ level is designated for social activities, with a custom wine cellar and bar, feature window onto the pool above, and a games room section that flows into a dance studio.
