The Introduction

A clever integration of the new versus the old for an existing office space. Focussing on efficiency and privacy, this private office accommodates a big library of books that needed to be incorporated as a main element in the design. A new, fresh look was introduced by adding more shelves to match the existing, creating new desks that would rejuvenate but not intimidate the existing look and finally, filling negative spaces with shelving and storage boxes. The colour pallet for this project was inspired by cover binds of existing books that line the walls of the office. New, custom designed desks combine polished mahogany, distressed leather and brushed stainless steel to elevate the dark interior and blend with the leathery texture palette picked up from the books.

The Brief

Small changes make a big difference with this renovation project. The parameters mostly stemmed from a fixed process within the office and how it functions around an existing filing structure and storage system. Everything needed to remain intact throughout the refurbishment and the overall character of the existing space carried through into the new. The client’s book and art collection take pride of place - our design intervention needed to improve the client’s practical use of his space, without taking away from the impressive library and striking artworks.

Project Features

The existing desk design had the client with his back to his door – this is a vulnerable position to sit in, and also didn’t allow him privacy with regards to his screen and sensitive information. Desk position needed to allow our client to have a visual to his office door and incoming guests, and to offer him computer screen privacy when he had visitors. Social distancing measures meant he could host meetings in his office but remain seated at his desk – again, with access to his work material at his fingertips. He also needed to be easily able to move between his screen for online meetings and his laptop for easily accessible information during extended online meetings.
