The Introduction
This family holiday apartment is located on one of the upper floors of a newly completed high-rise residential tower designed by Craft of Architecture. Boasting panoramic views of the KZN coastline & city scape, the views are front and center to the interior design which is otherwise uncomplicated.
The Brief
The apartment has a paired back minimalist aesthetic with simple clean lines and the use of curves to maximize on space and soften hard corners on the circulation space. Oak floors underfoot throughout, changing to a tonally similar tile only in wet areas sets the tone for a neutral architectural palette highlighted by natural timber and stone textures, and a selection of muted, warm material tones.
The Inspiration
The bespoke sofa is modular, with a combination of chaise and armed pieces usable from multiple sides and keeping lines of sight triangulated from lounge to dining and kitchen areas. Decorative designer elements in the living area include the Poise coffee table, Edge TV server, Slide side table and Modular Loft sofa + Pastel armchairs designed by Mobius which are complimented by mid-century cushions by South African Pattern Lab.
The Furniture
By using a soft palette of calm colours and textures, with clean curved upholstered furniture that is grounded in the space, we have created a cloud-like experience for the user that is immediately calming on arrival. The outcome is a sophisticated retreat that responds to the client’s taste and does not compete with the surrounding views, but rather invites calm contemplation and appreciation of place and family connectivity.
Dining Area Inspiration
The dining area is articulated with a Vogel designed Flo oak dining room table which re-iterates simple conic curves on every single surface. The tulip dining chairs from Louw Roets add an element of craft with the dramatic curves in the back rest and hand-woven seats. A botanical illustration from local artist Joh Del reflects that undulating greenery in the surrounding landscape.
